A Portsmouth school finished runner-up in this year's Army Schools Challenge
Pupils from Mayfield School, North End, navigated an inflatable obstacle course, tried target shooting and laser clay pigeon shooting as well as a gun run, combat stretcher race and combat sports race.

More than 400 students took part in the tough competition at Sir John Moore Barracks, Winchester, designed to test teamwork, communication and stamina.

Major Carol Miller, event organiser, said: 'Everyone including the soldiers and teachers had a fantastic day and some of the students showed a real interest in career opportunities in the regular and Territorial Army.

'The military-based activities they took part in relate back to the different trades in the army and scenarios soldiers may come across.'

The winning school was Grove Park Business and Enterprise College in Sholing, Southampton.

All who took part on the day were given an Army Be The Best goodie bag.
