Counterfeit Pompey products targeted
DODGY traders selling counterfeit Pompey goods are being targeted by trading standards officials.
Since Pompey made it to the final of the FA Cup there has been a surge in the number of traders selling Pompey goods on the streets.
Flags, scarves, hats and other memorabilia have been seen at temporary street stalls across Portsmouth, with some selling goods featuring the club badge, but not authorised by Pompey.
Now Portsmouth City Council's trading standards officers have stepped up their campaign to clamp down on the sale of counterfeit goods – a crime with a maximum fine of £10,000 or six months' jail.
Trading standards manager Robert Briggs said: 'We're here to protect the public from buying shoddy goods.'
Mr Briggs said he did not know how many traders had been investigated so far but his officers had brought 'a number of items' into the council offices.
He said those caught trading in counterfeit goods would have their wares confiscated and then face court.
Portsmouth Football Club spokesman Gary Double said: 'We take this very seriously.'
Anyone with information about counterfeit goods can call Consumer Direct on 0845 404050.
