Former music teacher Simon Paul has been jailed after logging on to a website aimed at snaring paedophiles.
The depraved 53-year-old was found with 6,000 indecent images of children being sexually abused, raped and tortured.
Nearly half involved youngsters under the age of 13 while some of the pictures showed children as young as five being abused.
Police raided his home after being tipped off by an unnamed foreign police force which had set up a fake website aimed at trapping paedophiles.
Paul, of Cheriton Road, Gosport, has now been jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Detective Constable Dave McKeeman said: 'Paul had accessed an image on-line in the belief that it was an indecent image of a child.
'A long and thorough investigation was then commenced, resulting in Paul being charged with a number of offences relating to the possession, distribution and making of indecent images of children.'
Police, working in conjunction with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, took four computers belonging to Paul after raiding his house.
They discovered hundreds of pages of chat logs between him and other perverts in which they fantasised about what they wanted to do to children.
Portsmouth Crown Court heard one of the officers who had to trawl through Paul's collection of child pornography described it as the worst he had seen.
Judge Roger Hetherington said: 'It's difficult to see how there could have been a worse case as far as the actual images are concerned.
'One of the most striking features of this case is that when you were arrested in December and then released on bail you went straight out again and bought yourself a new computer and within 54 hours of being bailed you had gathered together similar matter on your new PC.'
Mitigating on Paul's behalf, Christopher Stopa told the court that his client had a been a dedicated music teacher in the past and bitterly regretted his actions. It was not revealed in court where Paul had taught music.
