PLANS to put up wind turbines at a giant Tesco supermarket have come under fire from environmentalists.
Hampshire Friends of The Earth is angry after the supermarket announced it is delaying rebuilding its store in Solent Road, Havant to add the environmentally-friendly features.

The proposals include wind turbines, timber frames, combined heat and
power and rainwater harvesting.

The store is to be demolished to be replaced by a Tesco Extra store, double in size, selling everything from groceries to home furnishings.

But the environmental group, which campaigned against increasing the size of the store, has criticised the efforts to go green.

Ray Cobbett, co-ordinator for Hampshire Friends of the Earth, said: 'Claims by Tesco that it wants to be greener are all wind and no substance. Its wind generator plan smacks of a token gesture.

'Any reductions achieved at the individual store level are more than wiped out by the growth in new stores.

'The new store, if it goes ahead, will generate more carbon from being built, run and attracting considerable more cars to the site.'

Work was due to start in January, but now needs approval from Havant Borough Council.

Tesco says it has to introduce the measures to meet government targets for all businesses to reduce pollution.

At last the Eco ists have decided that Wind Turbines are next to useless in green power generation.
What next, the demand that new structures are barred from using electricity.

Well thanks for your professional opinion bladesblue but wind turbines are a perfectly effective method of producing sustainable energy.

It seems to me that friends of the earth are shooting themselves in the foot here. They clearly are opposed to the construction of massive supermarkets which require people to drive to them etc. but the fact is they are going to be built and there’s nothing they can do to stop them. By condemning Tesco for trying to make the store greener they are sending out mixed messages which poor ignorant and delusional Joe Bloggs on the street, who it has to be said are so in denial and cynical of any notion of global warming that they cant see what is the reality around them, mistake for a condemnation of wind power and green measures in general.
