Hundreds turn out to welcome back HMS Nottingham

HMS Nottingham returned home to a warm welcome in Portsmouth today after six-months in the South Atlantic.
Waiting dockside were 800 friends and family of the sailors on board.

Lieutenant Commander Rufai Ajala, a weapons engineer officer on board Nottingham, said as she came in: 'It's a fantastic homecoming. It's been a hard deployment. It seems longer than six months.

'The atmosphere today is great. It's a fantastic feeling.'

The Type 42 destroyer was providing protection to the UK's interests in the region, including the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

During the deployment, Nottingham covered more than 25,000 miles, visited five different countries and three continents.

She carried out a wide range of training including exercises with UK armed forces in the region and foreign navies.
