Gosport's long-standing MP has received his knighthood from the Queen during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Sir Peter Viggers was awarded the knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List earlier this year and attended yesterday's ceremony with his wife Jenny Viggers.
The father-of-three has been Gosport's elected representative in Parliament since 1974.
During his political career, he has been Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Solicitor General (1979-1983), and to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury (1983-1985). He also served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Industry Minister) at the Northern Ireland Office (1986 1989).
Sir Peter was born in Gosport in 1938 and was educated at Alverstoke School, Portsmouth Grammar School, and Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
He qualified as a fast jet pilot in Canada during his time with the RAF and later served as a Captain in the Royal Artillery (Territorial Army).
He was a solicitor and banker when he was selected as Conservative candidate for the new Gosport constituency in 1974.
