Sun worshippers enjoyed hotter temperatures than Mediterranean resorts yesterday.
Lee-on-the-Solent was the hottest spot in Britain yesterday with a sweltering 26.9C recorded at 2pm at the Gosport weather centre.
This compared with Athens and the Algarve at 20C and temperatures in the Balearic islands only managing to hit the high teens.
Met office forecaster Dave Elliott said the second highest temperatures were recorded at Great Malvern in Worcester; London weather centre and Bournemouth – all topping 25.5C.
But he added: 'It's going to be a lot more unsettled towards the end of the week. We're looking at outbreaks of showers and perhaps thunder on Wednesday evening, going into Thursday.
'The weekend is going to be a lot more overcast.
'Today is going to be good, as is the majority of Wednesday so the message is make the most of it while you can.'
