POLICE have examined and released a boat discovered drifting unmanned off Cornwall.
But there is still no sign of the 80-year-old sailor, who was missing when the boat, Midnight Oil, was found on Monday.

Authorities initially released details indicating that the missing pensioner, Peter Smith, was from Gosport.

But it has emerged that Mr Smith's home is in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and he was sailing from Scotland to Gosport to visit his son.

Search teams scoured the coast for the pensioner, who went missing on Saturday. The search was called off on Tuesday.

Devon and Cornwall Police are now investigating how Mr Smith was separated from his vessel, an ex-ship's lifeboat. They are treating it as a missing person investigation.

Police are talking to the pensioner's son, who is believed to have been on Midnight Oil with his father before it stopped at Milford Haven, South Wales.

He has said he left his father to finish the journey to Gosport alone.
