Published Date: 20 August 2008
A SAILOR'S diary of life in Nelson's Royal Navy has sold at auction for £59,000.
George Hodge's journal, which includes colour paintings of ships, flags and a self- portrait, fetched over double the pre-sale estimate when it was sold in America.

Hodge, an ordinary seaman, recorded the ships he served on, oceans he sailed, ports he visited and the actions in which he fought between 1790 and his retirement from the navy in 1833.

The diary includes sea shanty lyrics to a picture of his first ship and his tale of experiences of being captured twice by the French. It was part of a collection owned by J Welles Henderson, who died. The 600 lots sold for £1.6m.

Peter Coccoluto, of Northeast Auctions – coincidentally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, said: 'The diary was sold to a US dealer.'
