Smoking trouble at taxi ranks is due to be stubbed-out in a crackdown.
Gosport council is carrying out extra checks at taxi ranks to make sure drivers aren't dropping butts on the ground, and environment officers will also be keeping an eye out for drivers smoking in their vehicles.

The latest snooping operation means cab drivers caught puffing inside their vehicles will be fined £50 – and if they toss their cigarettes on the ground they will be hit with a £75 bill.

Officers will be keeping an eye on the taxi rank at Falklands Gardens.

The crackdown comes after members of the public and a driver complained to the council about smoking.

Council environmental services manager Dave Jago said: 'It's against the law for them to smoke in their cabs and if they throw their cigarettes out of the window that's littering. We've had complaints about this and it's our duty to act.

'We will have more officers keeping an eye on the problem and if anyone is caught, they will be fined.'

Independent taxi driver Michael Poulter told The News: 'They haven't got any provision to dispose of the fag ends, yet they are going to be actively pursuing us.'

Mr Jago said he would look into the possibility of installing a cigarette bin at the rank in Falklands Gardens.

Orwells Britain is upon us!! Councils clearly have too much tax payers money to waste. Free Britain has surrendered to state imposition. God help us all.

The first idea that ALWAYS occurs to every local authority is to fine people!

We will employ some more wardens to 'police' a problem that isn't really a problem. The salaries will be paid from the public purse and cause a further drain on resources when funds could be better spent elsewhere.

Simple solutions seem to pass people by! The cheapest and most effective measure is to make provision for them to dispose of their waste.

If there is already a waste bin there, use that (no further cost). If there isn't, then install the cigarette bin. Why do we even need to 'look into the possibility'?

Just do it. Thirty quid? Job done, end of problem.

Sorry Graham, but installing a bin WILL NOT stop people throwing there fag butts on the floor! As for taxi drivers, have you every been in a taxi after the driver has been sitting there smoking? If so you probably wouldn't want to use the taxi unless you where a smoker.

Also smoking / littering is anti social. So the council wants to stop it. Anyway if the council don't do it it'll be up to the police to sort the situation, which they wont as the police have more important things to sort out....

I think this is a great idea, and I am a smoker.

It's also annoying when you get in a taxi cab to find u can't smoke but the driver has been puffing in the drivers seat for the last hour or so......

If you dont like the rules..... go and live in another country!

Is a cabbie allowed to smoke outside his cab and put the cigarette butt in the cab ashtray? I doubt if he would be breaking the law and would P off any anti-smoker.
