And as the final whistle was blown fans across the city - included an estimated 70,000 people watching the big screen at Southsea - cheered in celebration.
And their voices echoed those of the 25,000 Pompey fans at Wembley, where there were scenes of incredible jubilation.
Manager Harry Redknapp said: 'It's fantastic - for everybody, my family especially, the fans, the players, it's great.
'It has been a difficult year and to come here and win the FA Cup is a dream come true for me.'

His comments were echoed by captain Sol Campbell, who said: 'It's fantastic for the gaffer. He has brought this team together.'
He added: 'It's been a brilliant day. We have worked hard and we have had our luck through the rounds, but in the end we got the result.'
