Pub's neighbour in flooding battle

A MAN is locked in a bitter dispute with a pub after a house he owns became uninhabitable from serious flooding every time it rains.
Carpenter Terry Milne says that since the driveway of the Golden Lion pub in Bedhampton Road, Havant, was resurfaced last summer, rainwater pours straight into the cottage rather than running into the road drains.
Mr Milne claims he has spent £15,000 trying to keep the water at bay.
And he says his tenant has had to move out because the damage is so great, costing him £600 a month in rent.
He now wants pub owner Punch Taverns to compensate him.
The 51-year-old of West Street, Havant, said: 'We never had a problem with flooding or drainage until last summer just after the driveway was resurfaced.
'Since then the water just pours through the wall and into the house. It has ruined the plaster and the skirting-boards. Even the stairs are ruined. Every time it rains at night I get up at three or four in the morning and run down there to try to limit the damage.
'I'm not a wealthy landlord or anything – this house is my and my wife's pension ine and we are losing thousands of pounds because it is in such a mess.'
Mr Milne said he had written to the company requesting they go 50-50 on an independent surveyor, but he has yet to receive a reply.
The landlord of the pub refused to comment.
However, in a statement, a spokeswoman for Punch Taverns said: 'Punch Taverns is aware of a complaint relating to the Golden Lion in Havant, where neighbours have alleged that investment in the pub has led to drainage issues.
'Punch has recruited designers and contractors to try and determine the root cause of the problem, which is still undetermined.
'The matter is currently in the hands of Punch Taverns' insurance company, and we hope to reach a satisfactory outcome for all parties at the earliest opportunity.'
