Street entertainers to mark crusade milestone

STREET entertainers will add to the carnival atmosphere amid celebrations at Guildhall Walk tonight.
Revellers will be able to join in the festivities to mark a year of the News-backed Operation Drink Safe campaign.
The drive – to cut alcohol-fuelled violent crime and anti-social behaviour – was launched on July 27 last year and since then police say the number of violent incidents in Guildhall Walk have dropped.
The popular entertainment area had been identified as the most dangerous street in Portsmouth.
Between 7pm and 11pm police, paramedics, council alcohol advisors, street pastors, doorstaff and publicans will all be telling revellers about how the year-long project has been going.
Those game for a laugh will be able to try driving a remote control car or walking in a straight line while wearing beer goggles – specially designed to mimic the effects of boozing.
Fundraising events will be held in the area to raise cash for the Portsmouth Autism Support Network.
