Two women were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation after toxic fumes spread into flats after a wheelie bin caught fire.
The large bins became alight at about 7pm yesterday in a yard next to a house converted into three flats in Gladys Avenue, North End, Portsmouth.
A fire crew from Copnor fire station put out the fire and helped a man and a woman out of the building.
The woman and another woman from the flats were suffering from the effect of smoke inhalation and were taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.
The police are not treating the fire as suspicious.
Cosham watch manager Tim Burgess said: 'The big wheelie bins give off a lot of toxic smoke as it's made out of plastic and it filled up the three flats.
'There wasn't a great deal of damage to the roof although there was some charring inside. Most of the fire damage was in the yard and the wheelie bins.'
