A BUSINESSMAN says he is losing trade because his customers are being clamped in a nearby pub car park.
The Ship and Bell, in London Road, Horndean, introduced clampers to both its main and overflow car parks two weeks ago to stop them being used by shoppers going to the Spar, Gen Plus pharmacy and a bakery.

Just last Saturday six unsuspecting customers were clamped and it got so heated police had to be called.

Now Bill Foley, the general manager of Spar, said he has seen 20 per cent less customers and trade has taken a hit.

'This loss in custom has also been reflected by our neighbouring businesses, some of which have been in the village for over 20 years,' he said.

'We quite understand the Ship and Bell has the right to use any means at their disposal to control the parking on their property.

'We have allowed a sign to be erected on our building to reiterate the parking situation, but we have also noted that the main car park is rarely used during the day, and has for many years been used by members of the public popping to the shops.

'Now, villagers risk being clamped and hit with a £125 release fee while getting their paper, bacon or an NHS prescription.'

Since the closure of Gales Brewery two years ago villagers have used the 10 spaces in the overflow car park while they nipped in and out of the shops.

But now anyone using the car park without going into the pub faces a £125 fine.

This could rise to £195 if they do not cough up the money and the car is towed away.

But Fullers, the pub owner, said some of their own customers had been blocked in by lorries delivering to the Spar shop.

The company said the clampers were only brought in as a last resort.

The pun are quite right in what they are doing - the landlord of the pub is paying rates for his property why on earth should they expect or be allowed to park for free - I do not believe the cheek of Bill Foley complaining - let him find a car park for his customers - the pub has had to do so!

Quite right. What a cheek these shop owners have by complaining about parking on land that is clearly not theirs. Why do folk think that it is OK to flout the law. Parking on private property, without permission, is illegal under the law of this land, though not criminal. The village of Horndean is not that big and folk could easily walk to the shops. The landlord should keep on clamping and the shop keepers should wake up to themselves, address their customers needs and stop moaning.

good for the pub. why should they allow shop customers to use their car park. as long as they have a sign up about clamping the drivers are the only ones to blame. as it is they could always park behind the village/church hall up blendworth road. as for takings being perhaps the novelty of having another over priced convenient store in the area has worn off

Maybe the shop could negotiate with the pub to pay for some 'parking permits' for it's regular customers who have the option to buy them then the pub gets paid, the shop owner knows how loyal customers will be....

I have lived in Horndean for nearly 70 years, and remember when the village had a green grocer, butchers etc. I was delighted to see a pharmacy back in the village, and the new spar, that is very handy.many of the older villigers find it difficult to to travel to morrisions , which used to take me at least and hour and a half round trip. The Ship and Bell pub carpark has been used by villagers for years, when going to the bakers, or the old butchers.
The idea of clampers in the village is the last straw. Not only has the brewery been closed by Fullers, but now they are clamping locals as well. This can only be discribed as bully boy tacktics.

I couldn't agree more with the gentlemen that has lived in Horndean for 70 years, I've not lived here that long! But people need to support local businesses in a market like it is today. Where do the Pub get off charging people £125 for parking in a car park that belongs to the brewery, has anyone informed the brewery about the Managers of the Pub dealing with the local people like this! I am sure as somelse has stated that the shop and brewery will be able to come to an arrangement that suits everyone. Local bussinesses should be supporting each other otherwise there will be no local shops only supermarkets and no local pubs only wine bars! If the lorrys are blocking customers in the car park what happened to the days of going through to the shop and saying excuse me your blocking me in mate do you mind moving - not waisting police time by bringing them into it really don't think that is the best use of our tax money!! Come on people enough is enough - use your common sense you should be promting each other not hiding round corners waiting to rip people off by charging the £125 for parking!!!! By the way who gets the £125 the pub!?!

Even the spar's statement recognises that the car park belongs to the ship and bell so I can't understand their complaint really. Had they considered this as part of their planning permission and negotiated early thay may have been received more favourably by the land owners. Now they are moaning because they didn't think through the implications of their proposal in parking terms. To be honest the council aren't squeaky clean, they should have considered parking before giving planning permission. If the manager thinks getting it in the local paper is going to bring locals on his side he is sadly mistaken.

its about time somebody took a stand against the very unsociable action taken by large companies within small communities. We done to local businesses standing up for there customers, well done for people willing to stand up against the money making schemes by companies overcharging for a pint, nearly £4 these days. What happened to the landlord who welcomed locals into his pub, got involved with local community, not getting involved by clamping them and charging them all that money.I was a regular at the ship and bell, but this landlord is driving people away and last week end , my friend was clamped. Going to the red lion in future

How petty and immature of the managers at spar to go running to the press! Well done to the managers of the ship & bell for supporting their customers!
I have been going to the ship & bell for many years now and am outraged by people talking of supporting their "local" business when they show no support for the pub that has been around for over 150 years! What a joke!! I also wonder how our other local businesses like the bakery or the news agents are doing after the introduction of this "handy" new spar?!
The pub is not hiding the fact that they are clamping so if people do get clamped it is down to their own ignorance!!
You have legs, use them!!
