Village businesses' takings down after pub clamping spree

A BUSINESSMAN says he is losing trade because his customers are being clamped in a nearby pub car park.
The Ship and Bell, in London Road, Horndean, introduced clampers to both its main and overflow car parks two weeks ago to stop them being used by shoppers going to the Spar, Gen Plus pharmacy and a bakery.
Just last Saturday six unsuspecting customers were clamped and it got so heated police had to be called.
Now Bill Foley, the general manager of Spar, said he has seen 20 per cent less customers and trade has taken a hit.
'This loss in custom has also been reflected by our neighbouring businesses, some of which have been in the village for over 20 years,' he said.
'We quite understand the Ship and Bell has the right to use any means at their disposal to control the parking on their property.
'We have allowed a sign to be erected on our building to reiterate the parking situation, but we have also noted that the main car park is rarely used during the day, and has for many years been used by members of the public popping to the shops.
'Now, villagers risk being clamped and hit with a £125 release fee while getting their paper, bacon or an NHS prescription.'
Since the closure of Gales Brewery two years ago villagers have used the 10 spaces in the overflow car park while they nipped in and out of the shops.
But now anyone using the car park without going into the pub faces a £125 fine.
This could rise to £195 if they do not cough up the money and the car is towed away.
But Fullers, the pub owner, said some of their own customers had been blocked in by lorries delivering to the Spar shop.
The company said the clampers were only brought in as a last resort.
