Ferry operator Wightlink has put up charges in a bid to cope with spiralling fuel costs.
The surcharge is 20p extra each way for foot passengers (full return journey now costs £18), 75p for motorcycles (£30.50), £1.50 for cars (£40.50), £2.25 for freight journeys (98.87) and £3 for coaches (£260).

The ferry firm said if oil costs continue to rocket, it will be forced to increase its fares accordingly.

Red Funnel, which runs services from Southampton to Cowes, will also axe four lunchtime sailings of its high-speed Red Jet service from May 19.

Wightlink boss Andrew Wilson said he was now left with 'no choice' but to introduce the surcharge.

He said: 'Fuel is our second biggest cost after staff, so the recent steep rises in the price of oil has had a major impact on us.

'We've been holding back from introducing a fuel surcharge in the hope that fuel prices would fall back to the levels anticipated in our planning for 2008.'
