Aaron Gent from RNLI Portsmouth reflects back on the past few months and lets us know what’s in store for the rest of the year

During the spring the Portsmouth Atlantic 85 Class Lifeboat Norma T returned to station after an extensive winter upgrade.

Early on in the summer, both Portsmouth Lifeboats were requested to launch in the middle of the night, to search for a pair of elderly gentlemen who had not returned after launching several hours earlier, taking a dinghy out to retrieve their moored vessel.

The duo came into difficulty when the boat’s engine failed to start, leaving them adrift.

Both lifeboats launched around 12.30am and after about 30 minutes of searching the gentlemen and vessel were found clinging to the side of the Langstone harbour board’s boat being pulled towards the mouth of the harbour.

In June, both boats were requested to assist a father and son who had become stranded, after getting caught out by a fast falling tide. The rescue operation saw the lifeboats work alongside a specialist Coastguard mud unit to recover the pair across more than 100 metres of sticky Langstone Harbour mud.

In July the America’s Cup World Series came to Southsea and the Portsmouth and Bembridge Lifeboats were proud to be part of the event.

They spent four days giving displays and patrolling the waters, ensuring the race and spectator areas were kept safe and to provide a quick response for any potential incidents.
