THERE were sighs of relief all round after the Solent hovercraft had a near miss as it came in to land in heavy fog.

Gunwharf Quays resident Dan Goonewardene took these photos standing next to Clarence Pier about 5.30pm on Thursday.

He said: ‘As it came out of the fog we realised it was heading straight for the pier rather than the beach where it usually lands.

‘Almost at the last second he did a 90 degree turn and came out of it. It seemed pretty last-minute when he realised where he was going. Should they be operating the hovercraft in conditions like that?’

Hovertravel spokesman Stephen Forster declined to comment on the incident, but said: ‘The craft will slow down or speed up as required to make a safe landing.’
