A section of the A3 was completely closed for several hours today after a serious accident.

Police were called at around 9.30am today to reports of an overturned car on the southbound carriageway at Liss

It is understood the Ford Ka was travelling north and crossed over the central reservation and came to rest on the opposite carriageway.

The woman driving was taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance with life-threatening injuries.

Both southbound and northbound carriageways of the A3 were closed for the police to investigate the scene.

Diversions were in place via Liss.

At this time no other vehicles are believed to have been involved but police are keeping an open mind and are looking into whether or not that is the case.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the vehicle driving prior to it.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Roads Policing Unit, quoting Operation Decathlon, on 101.

The road was reopened at around 1pm.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: ‘Apologies for the delays. Both carriageways were affected with damage and debris.’
