TV star Brian Blessed traced his family roots back to Portsmouth on an ancestry show screened tonight.

He was shown on the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? His relative Barnabas was in the city in 1814 but ended up a pauper.

He met historian John Stedman in the city to learn about life back when his ancestor was living here.

The actor also visited St Mary’s Church in Fratton, which had records of his ancestors’ deaths.
