PORTSMOUTH's World Aids day service is to be included on the city council's official civic events list for the first time.

The city has held services on December 1 each year, the day set aside by the UN to remember those who have died from the disease worldwide, at the John Pounds Church in Old Portsmouth.

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, leader of council said: 'It was something we wanted to do because many of us attend the service, and it's right to set aside time to remember loved ones who have lost their lives to Aids.

'The Lord Mayor will make an appearance.'

This year's service, which will take place on the evening of Wednesday, December 1, will be led by the Rev Paul Miles-Knight.
