THIS shocking image shows a lorry that was on fire following a multi-vehicle crash on the M27.
The air ambulance has been called to the scene of the collision, which involved at least four vehicles, and happened just before Junction 9 of the eastbound carriageway at Whiteley, at 9.15am this morning.
One of the vehicles involved, a container lorry, caught on fire, and emergency services are on the scene.
Both carriageways of the M27 are closed, causing major delays.
Police have advised motorists to avoid the area.
A Hampshire Police spokesman said: ‘We are dealing with a serious collision between junctions 8 and 9, between Hamble and Whiteley involving several vehicles.
‘We may need to close the motorway in both directions to allow the Air Ambulance to land to help a casualty. We will keep you updated as this develops but please be aware and if you are on the M27 currently heading towards this area expect significant tailbacks whilst this is being dealt with.’
It has been reported the motorway is not expected to reopen until 4pm.
Fire crews from Hightown, Cosham, St Mary’s and a special equipment unit from Redbridge are in attendance.
Details of any injuries are not yet known.
