A CAR overturning on the A27 has caused severe delays.

The road was closed in both directions between Havant and Portsmouth to allow the air ambulance to land.

The accident happened at about 10am when a car flipped over on the A27 westbound, near to the sliproad for the Eastern Road in Portsmouth.

Emergency services were at the scene within minutes.

Police closed both sides of the road as the air ambulance needed to land on the A27.

The man was still trapped inside the car when the helicopter landed, so police directed the aircraft into a nearby field.

The man was rescued from the wreckage and taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham for treatment.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Heavy traffic built up in both directions, but the road is now open again.

One lane on the westbound side is still closed while emergency services clear the debris.
