ALAN MAK MP: Lest we forget

Today is one of the most important days of the year, when our constituency '“ and the whole country '“ falls silent to pay its respects to our armed forces and the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our nation.

Even as the last veterans from the two world wars pass away, the strength of support for our veterans grows stronger.

Every year I volunteer to sell poppies for the Royal British Legion and I am always moved by the support from local residents.

Thank you to all residents who have backed the Poppy Appeal.

All the money raised goes towards essential services to help our brave servicemen and women.

It is a cause that people of all ages can get fully behind, from schoolchildren to pensioners.

Everyone will take a moment today to reflect on how our countrymen fought and died to protect our freedom in conflicts past and present.

Last week I welcomed pupils from Springwood Infant School, Stakes to Westminster for a second year running.

They laid wreaths they’d made at school at the Cenotaph, our national war memorial.

It was a poignant moment to see the next generation paying their respects despite the bad weather.

During today’s two-minute silence I will be at Crookhorn College for their Remembrance Assembly, explaining why I believe so strongly in supporting our Armed Forces.

That belief has only been strengthened having spent a year doing ‘work experience’ with the Royal Navy alongside my usual MP duties.

I was also pleased last week to be at The News Best of Health Awards to hand out the prize for the Hospital Team of the Year, sponsored by Laly’s Pharmacy.

It was a fantastic event that highlighted the great work of our health sector and shows the incredible work they do.

Special congratulations to The Elms Practice on Hayling Island, Precision Dental Practice and Sisterly Care for all being shortlisted for awards.

In parliament, Monday will see the launch of my policy paper with 20 ideas for the government about how we can lead the world in new technologies like 3D printing and driverless cars which are part of the so-called ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution.’

Business Secretary Greg Clark will be joining me as I highlight Havant’s strength as an industrial centre.
