HOT on the heels of celebrating the anniversary of its twinning with a French town, Gosport has played host to a visitor from its American namesake.

Former mayor of Gosport, Councillor Richard Dickson, has been keeping the town’s transatlantic connection alive.

Cllr Dickson, known as Dixie, and partner Bobbie Irvine played host to Jennifer Trotman, 55, from Gosport, in the eastern American state of Indiana.

It was the second time Ms Trotman had visited Hampshire’s Gosport, which she said is very different to her rural home town with a population of 700.

Ms Trotman said: ‘A couple of years ago Dixie came over to Gosport and he said “come on over”.

‘It’s just been fabulous. I’ve enjoyed every bit of Gosport.

‘Gosport, Indiana, has only 700 people, it’s a very small town – a village.’

Ms Trotman explored the town, yesterday paying a visit to the Alver Valley before she was due to fly back today.

As reported, Cllr Dickson visited the namesake town in America – more than 5,000 miles away – and visited its town council. It comprises just three people compared to the 34 councillors who represent people at Gosport Borough Council.

The last time visitors came from the American town was in 2004 for the UK Gosport’s 800th anniversary celebrations, which were organised by Cllr Peter Edgar. Cllr Dickson, his partner Bobbie and Ms Trotman also paid a visit to Normandy during the D-Day commemorations.

And the trio sat in on a Hampshire County Council cabinet meeting in Winchester.

Cllr Dickson said: ‘It’s been brilliant. We’ve had an absolutely fantastic holiday.’

He praised Bobbie who has organised the fortnight-long trip.

Cllr Dickson now hopes to go over to America and visit Gosport again after his previous visit in September 2012.
