MORE than 500 people have signed a petition against the changes to a bus route.
The number 4 bus was one of several services to change at the end of July, in Fareham and Gosport.
But residents in Lee-on-the-Solent are unhappy with the changes which have seen roads missed off the new route and an extra 30 minutes added to the journey.
Led by Sandra Juggins, who lives near the seafront, residents have signed a petition that has been handed into Hampshire County Council.
Sandra said: ‘There are a lot of people in Lee-on-the-Solent unhappy with the new bus routes. But they cannot speak out for themselves.
‘I have encountered elderly people, disabled people and others who are very upset and shocked with the changes.’
The number 4 service has been replaced with the 4X and the 5X.
It now runs every 30 minutes between The Hard, in Portsmouth, to Southampton but there is an additional stop to Fareham bus station.
But for the residents in Lee-on-the-Solent, the extra stop to Fareham is causing them problems. Sandra, 49, added: ‘The route used to go straight from Gosport to us in Lee then to Southampton and it would take around one and half hours to get to Southampton from the ferry.
‘Now it takes two hours. That is too long for people to travel. Many people have said they won’t go to Southampton now.’
The route has also changed and Sandra’s friend Angie Atkinson, who also lives near the seafront, says whole roads are now missed out.
The 56-year-old said: ‘People now have to walk further to the bus stop and then spend more time on the bus.
‘It is ridiculous. The extra stops have made me late for work.’
The pair added that even though the buses are more frequent, they used to be once an hour, the changes to the route have made the service worse.
Sandra said: ‘The bus being once an hour was better and at least it was one time.’
A spokesman for First said: ‘Very few people used the service from end to end. The new service has added 30 minutes to the journey from Gosport to Southampton.
‘The new revised service of X4 and X5 has been very well received by many customers as it has provided a 33 per cent increase in the number of buses operating between Fareham, Locks Heath and Southampton.’
