AXING a popular bus service in West Sussex has caused outrage.

Residents fear they will be left stranded once the number 11 bus service, ran by Emsworth and District bus company, stops operating in September.

The bus runs from Thorney Island to Emsworth Square and through to Westbourne, Southbourne, along the main road to Bosham, Nutbourne, Chidham and into Fishbourne, until it reaches Chichester.

It is one of a number of services being stopped as West Sussex County Council makes £2m of savings in bus subsidies.

It means residents wanting to go to Chichester will have to catch a bus in Emsworth or Havant.

Lyn Turton, 68, from Southbourne, said: ‘I have got nothing – the bus was my lifeline.’

Councillor Pieter Montyn, who is in charge of transport in West Sussex, said: ‘Regretfully some tough decisions have had to be made, but faced with the reduction in grant funding, we had no other option.

‘We will do everything we can to support those communities where a service has been withdrawn.’
