Apprentice positions created for youngsters in Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH based charity, The Boleh Trust, has received a large cash boost for its latest project.
The organisation was awarded £55,800 from Heritage Lottery Fund to kick start the restoration of an historic yacht called Boleh.
The trust will later apply for a full grant of just over £440,000 to fully restore Boleh and establish an apprentice training programme.
Young apprentices will learn heritage skills to make Boleh fit to sail again, while gaining credits towards professional shipwright qualifications.
The funding will also provide significant community involvement in this unusual heritage project.
Once restored, Boleh will be used to help disadvantaged youngsters, by giving them the chance to sail the vessel and build confidence, leadership and team working skills.
George Middleton, chairman of the Boleh Trust, said, ‘We’re absolutely delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has agreed to support the Boleh Trust in giving young people in the area the chance to find skilled employment.’
