THE MP for Portsmouth South has praised a pub for clinching a top award.

Flick Drummond has given support to The Hole In The Wall, in Great Southsea Street, Southsea, after it scooped the Campaign for Real Ale’s Portsmouth and south-east Hampshire Pub of the Year award earlier this year.

I wish you and your team every success for your latest year as champions and I shall be watching with interest to see whether anyone manages to catch up with you as the 2017 competition takes shape.

As reported, it is the fifth year on the trot the local has bagged the prize. It had also won it in 2007 and 2009.

In a letter to Hole In The Wall landlords Jonathan and Kerry McKerracher, Mrs Drummond praised the pub’s ‘wonderful atmosphere’ and said she’d be keeping a close eye on whether any other local pub could snatch the prize from them in future.

Mrs Drummond said: ‘Congratulations on winning the Jim Fox Memorial Trophy yet again as Portsmouth and South East Camra Pub of the Year for 2016.

‘It is a remarkable achievement to win the title for a fifth consecutive year and I wish you both all the best for the future.

‘We’re lucky to have excellent real ale pubs around Portsmouth.

‘It’s a real tribute to the wonderful atmosphere in the pub that you are able yet again to hold off competitors.

‘I wish you and your team every success for your latest year as champions and I shall be watching with interest to see whether anyone manages to catch up with you as the 2017 competition takes shape.’

The pub will be presented with a trophy by local Campaign for Real Ale branch members on Saturday, April 30 at the venue.

The occasion takes place from midday and usually sees supporters go on a pub crawl marking the achievement.
