THE annual Fareham Wheelers Cycling Club awards evening took place last weekend with guest speaker Stephen ‘Sparky’ Parks, the British Olympic and Paralympic sailing team manager.
As a keen cyclist himself, and with a close connection to the Team GB cycling manager Dave Brailsford, Sparky was a most entertaining guest and gave an extremely interesting and amusing talk about the Olympic sailing team and its parallels with British cycling.
Afterwards came the prize giving presentation, with numerous cups and medals awarded for well-deserved successes over the past cycling year, both in and outside racing.
With a recent surge in the number of youth and junior riders in Fareham Wheelers, and with many of these riders now representing the club at a regional and national level, most of the awards went to the younger riders – a very positive sign of things to come!
Other achievements included Nigel Sign who was awarded the Challenge Cup after overcoming a heart attack last year to now lead a group in our weekly Sunday club rides from Wickham.
Nigel is also a member of the National Escort Group, which helps keep riders safe in cycle races across Britain.
Our Clubman Of The Year Award (for outstanding services to the club) went to Angus Fileman for his work as club coach – a position he hands to Dr. Chester Hill for 2013 as he becomes road race secretary.
Fareham Wheelers Cycling Club looks forward to another successful year and we always welcome new members.
