SHOPPERS hungry for a bargain, packed out the city's shops, making the most of the Christmas sales.

More than 350 people queued from 4.30am outside Next, in the Cascades, Portsmouth, for the first day of the sales.

The shop was so busy the queue snaked all the way to the front of the shopping centre and bouncers were used to control the crowd.

At one point it was 20 in, 20 out, allowing staff to refresh the shelves with more sale items.

Becky Sargent, from Queens Road, Copnor, said: 'It was nice to be able to snap up some nice things for myself.

'It was so busy, you could hardly move in Commercial Road but it was a good atmosphere.'
