STAFF from Blue Reef Aquarium, the public, the MD of Hovertravel Neil Chapman and volunteers from Veolia Environmental Services took part in a beach tidy event on Southsea seafront.

In an hour, 30 people, pictured, found a discarded bicycle, a mobile phone, broken glass and hundreds of pieces of plastic.

Blue Reef’s Jen Atkinson, who helped organise the event, said: ‘We were surprised and delighted with the numbers of people who turned up to take part in the beach clean.

‘Pretty much all the rubbish we recovered is potentially damaging to the marine environments and could also post a threat to the public so we’d like to thank everyone who took part for a job well done.’

The next beach clean is on Friday, September, 14 at 3pm. For details call (023) 9287 5222.
