Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Mike Ford, looks back on some memorable musical performances he has been to during his time in office

The incredible depth and breadth of talent that we have in Fareham is astonishing and many opportunities exist for youngsters in particular to develop their talents.

Being involved in amateur dramatics at Warsash, we take a keen interest in youth development in stagecraft, as this gives so many benefits to our youngsters, not least of all confidence.

It has been a treat therefore to visit the Academy of Future Stars at Portchester Community School, who teach singing, acting and dancing to those five years old and upwards.

Staying with youth, 60 years of the Gosport and Fareham Youth Orchestra was celebrated this year and uniquely, the group brought back to play many former members including a few founder musicians; a truly inspiring concert.

In the next age group up we have watched a lovely production of The Jungle Book by the Fareham Musical Society’s Youth group, a really colourful and vibrant production.

At a more senior level, The Hampshire Police Choir celebrated 75 years of existence this year and we enjoyed a wonderful concert from them in the Ferneham Hall, ably supported by the County Police Band.

There is something special about bands from our uniformed and military groups and we have been privileged to listen to the excellent HMS Collingwood Volunteer Band on a number of occasions, most recently at the RNA’s concert at Holy Rood Church.

One pretty unique group that enables those who seek singing for purely social reasons and who do not perhaps wish to endure an audition, are the Fareham 50+ Singers, the title relating to age not numbers.

These enthusiasts produced a superb concert in the perfect venue of Holy Trinity Church, with proceeds in aid of the mayor’s charities, a wonderful gesture.

Space precludes me from telling readers of the many stage productions that we have attended, suffice to say that the future of music, dance and singing in Fareham is guaranteed for many years to come.
