Best Amateur Actor: James Hume
Nineteen-year-old James Hume first made a brief appearance on stage at the awards in the CCADS sequence from Passion, and then returned as a winner for two performances with HumDrum.
He might have won it as the all-singing, all-dancing Cat in the Hat in the musical, Seussical, at the New Theatre Royal, or playing the ambiguously sinister title role in Entertaining Mr Sloane at Havant Arts Centre, both with HumDrum. The fact he could encompass both with equal distinction makes him a rare talent.
James, from Gosport, says: 'I joined HumDrum and CCADS to get the challenges to explore different characters.'
He is now on his way to a professional career, having began training this autumn at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, and he says: 'Cat in the Hat and Sloane were the icing on the cake before I went to Central.
'They were very kind and gave me the afternoon off to come to the ceremony – and I'm very glad they did!'
Runner-up: Stuart Warner for his performance as Billy Bigelow in Carousel with Portsmouth Players. The production thrived on his ability not only to sing the music strongly but to act through it.
