Best Amateur Actress: Emma Carter
Because of commitments at the Arts Educational School in London, Emma Carter was unable to attend the awards ceremony.
But she was bubbling with delight after being told of her success.
Emma, who gave up her teaching job at Hayling Island to begin formal training this autumn at the age of 30, was honoured for her contrasting performances as a delicious Cecily in The Importance of Being Earnest for One Off and as a girlish, then smouldering and finally brave Nora in A Doll's House for Southsea Shakespeare Actors.
'Those companies have been fantastic in giving me a wide variety of parts,' she says. 'The Billy Liar I did with One Off last year was completely outside my comfort zone.
'So I haven't been cast to type, and I know the industry isn't necessarily going to be like that. But the Arts Educational School is fantastic. At the moment I'm rehearsing a David Hare play, The Secret Rapture, playing a strident and forthright Tory politician, which isn't me at all - so I'm challenged and stretched every day. It's everything I could have hoped for. I'm living the dream.'
Runner-up: Lynda Fleming for Ghost From A Perfect Place. Her performance was described as 'seriously terrifying and then seriously moving'.
