Best Artist / Exhibition: Magic of Masks and Puppets

The Magic of Masks and Puppets was an exhibition full of colour and fun that brought together a fascinating collection of puppets and masks from around the world, including items from film and television.

The masks and puppets were on display at the City Museum and Records Office in Portsmouth from January to April this year in a vibrant and enjoyable exhibition from the Scottish Mask & Puppet centre.

It included exquisite shadow puppets from India, Indonesia, Greece and Turkey as well as giant Russian Doll figures, Chinese marionettes and hand puppets, an antique Bunraku puppet from Japan and a Burmese Prince and Princess from the 19th century.

There was also a section dedicated to the European tradition including commedia dell'arte, Punch and Judy, toy theatre and Pelham Puppets.

Museums and Records Service Manager, Jane Mee, who collected the award, says: 'We were very pleased to get the first prize. It was very gratifying that the awards were voted for by the people of the city because it gave us a huge public endorsement of our work.

'It was a touring exhibition that we brought in at short notice, full of wonderful high-quality material from around the world – such as the baby from the film Trainspotting.

'It was even more popular than we anticipated and attracted record numbers of visitors of all ages and backgrounds'

Runner-up: Sea Your History: 20th Century Royal Navy. Naval memories were dredged up for this exhibition at the Royal Navy Museum, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

It was a collection of sailors' real-life experiences from war and at home.

It included exhibits such as a sketch book compiled by Commander Mervyn Scott Lindslay during his time held as a Japanese prisoner of war, a genuine German enigma machine and code book, a battered fire bucket used as a trophy in sports competitions between ships while on patrol in the Mozambique area between 1966 and 1975, and a rabbit carved from a flat piece of woodwhich was sent from HMS Largs as a souvenir of D-Day.

Events and marketing development manager, Bill Sainsbury accepted the award.
