Best Club Night: Chaos, the Wedgewood Rooms

The longest-established club night in the South is as popular as ever with its indie, rock, electro, punk and dance.

Chaos began in 1991 on the Pier when grunge was emerging and clubbers from then will remember the sounds of Nirvana, Mudhoney and Ministry and then Britpop from Oasis and Blur.

Over the past 17 years, more than a dozen DJs have graced the Chaos decks. Fans may remember Big Jay, Pedro, Lance, Archie, Fat Bob, Mike, Sparky, Gary Harris.

This summer it moved to the Wedgewood Rooms and these days if you head down to Chaos you can catch DJ Lemon, who's been on the decks there for six years and Will Chump and Marky Marc who have both been there for five.

Having been going so long, the club night has all sorts of traditions, such as free lollies for the first 100 paying customers.

Marky Marc and Will chuMp collected the award at the ceremony.

Will says: 'It's fantastic that Chaos has won this beautiful award. We've had some legendary events over the last year and I look forward to many more this coming year at our new home the world famous Wedgewood Rooms and our new adventures on the Isle of Wight.'

Runner-up: Funktifino, the Wedgewood Rooms

With their old school sounds of funk, soul, boogie, disco and hip-hop, this outfit have a broad appeal and a big following.

They had their 12th birthday last month and this year they started two new nights alongside their first Saturday of the month night at the Wedgewood Rooms.

You can now also catch them on the second Friday of each month at High Society at Tiger Tiger and the third Saturday of the month at Drift Bar in Southsea.

They're also hoping to release an album early next year.

DJs Barry Barnett (Chewbazza), Justin Turrell (Boba Funk) and Russell Tarley Jr (Hand Solo) picked-up the runner-up prize on the night.

Paul Cocker (DJ Darth Fader) says: 'It was excellent to get the runner-up place. Chaos is the only club night that's been running for longer than us so if we have to miss out on the top prize, it's nice to lose to them.

'In 12 years we hadn't won an award until this year and now we've won two. We also won Best Club night of the Year at Express FM's Golden Plectrum Awards.

'I think it's because this year we've broadened our spectrum by going into two other venues to appeal to different markets.'
