Best Touring Act: Newton Faulkner
Anyone who sees Newton Faulkner perform is captivated.
Even if you are not a fan, you have to applaud him for his songwriting, guitar-playing, voice and amazing ability to make the whole audience, no matter how big, feel like they are sitting in his back garden at a barbecue as he tells anecdotes, chats and performs.
Readers placed Newton well ahead of the rest for Best Touring Act for his gig at Portsmouth Guildhall and judges agreed.
The 23-year-old with 'the phenomenal dreadlocks' studied at the Academy Of Contemporary Music in Guildford, honing his distinctive throaty but gentle blues croon.
He's since clocked-up a Number One platinum album including songs such as I Need Something, Dream Catch Me (which sat in the UK Top Ten for three weeks) and a cover of Massive Attack's Teardrop. He also received a Brit nomination this year for Best Male Artist.
Newton couldn't attend the Guide Awards ceremony as he was in Los Angeles on an American tour.
He says: 'I'm actually on the road going round America with Ingrid Michaelson at the moment. I just want to say thank you very much indeed. I'm massively honoured because the live stuff is the bit that I feel most committed to and it's the bit that I started doing. So thank you.'
Runner-up: Vampire Weekend. This New York-based band look like they've walked straight off the set of an 80s brat pack movie and sound like they've been hanging out with a mix of folk and punk singers in the Bahamas.
Their album was the soundtrack to last summer and they've been wowing crowds across the UK with their laid-back live sound. Portsmouth fans were so impressed with their Wedgewood Rooms gig, they voted them runner-up in the Best Touring Act category.
