Bid to protect town trade

THE leader of Fareham Borough Council has voiced concerns that the new Whiteley shopping centre will impact on smaller independent shops.

Councillor Sean Woodward said he is aware that the Whiteley Co-ownership trust is trying to convince big name retailers in Fareham to move into Whiteley.

Cllr Woodward said: ‘I believe that Fareham Borough Council has a duty to protect our villages and town centre shops. You only have to go to Portsmouth and see what Gunwharf Quays has done to the city centre. I don’t want it to happen to Fareham.’

So much annoyance over a bit of open competition! Personally, I'm looking forward to what Whiteley has to offer.

@32 Stella - Only one individual here is digging at Shaun Cunningham; it's fairly obvious who it is if you read through the comments. Only one individual needs a to make an apology therefore but since he's never been known to make one publicly or otherwise, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Error on 32 What I should have said was that on FBC'S WEBSITE Councillor Nick Walker gives his address as Turrett House Hospital Lane........he wasn't up for election last time although that will be the case in May. By the way Councillor Sue Bell's address on FBC's website is now Turrett House Hospital Lane. I wonder who is living in Old Mill House. Smoke can be seen rising from the rooftop from what would appear to be a wood burning-stove.Perhaps it is still only a garage store and there is an error on the council tax banding website.

Perhaps if some of you actually bought the News in the past and read the letters from Shaun Cunningham, you would very soon find out about the work he had done in the community and his input on the New's campaign to save G5 at QA Hospital. He left politics over 30 years ago but made a valiant attempt to stand against Sue Bell in Portchester West at the last election. She is Councillor Nick Walker's partner who had her address as Old Mill House Hospital Lane on her election blurb. This house was supposed to have been demolished on completion of their new home on the site down by Portchester Castle but then they got permission to keep it as a garage store. I note since then that both properties are in the same council tax band. On his election blurb. Councillor Nick Walkers address on FBC'S website was Turrett House Hospital Lane (the new property)............... Shaun Cunningham didn't stand a chance to get elected against such deceit but at least there are over 200 people that supported him in Portchester West. I think you all owe him an apology. Perhaps you will write letters to the News and give your names and addresses, that would be a really nice gesture but I won't hold my breath.

The fact that Whitely might do to Fareham is just what Fareham did to Gosport some years ago. Carry on Whitely and let the competition begin. The Conservative party is always saying competition is everything, so Mr Woodward needs to stop whining.

I just wish that if Councillor Woodward does read these posts, whether he responds under fictitious names or not, that he will genuinely read and listen to peoples opinions and he worries less of his own. He must realise that the people of Whiteley need a shopping centre that is fully reliable and meets their needs. We have spent years battling an appalling public transport system, we have no shops (excl Tesco and a convenience store), we have insufficient school facilities and ridiculous accessegress roads. So please Cllr WW I appeal to you to think of your immediate electorates and put their needs first, not yours, theirs! Ironic that when Polling Day comes along your electorates receive personal phone calls as you canvass for votes yet for the remainder of the year we fall right to the bottom of the heap!

@11 - only just noticed that post. Yes I have voiced my opinion to him on many an occassion - so I am not a hypocrite as you suggest. Check your email inbox and you will see my emails to you (if you are Sean Woodward). I choose not to post my name because it is my right and I am not serving the people so do not have to publicly display it. IF you are Sean Woodward then you sir are a public servant in a position of trust and integrity and have no right to publicly name people you think are posting comments.

@20 So, are you using your council-provided connection to write your insults again, as you did when you made up people on Whiteley and the Cherque Farm forums? Naughty naughty.

@17 Who is this Steven Peters that you seem to have a personal vendetta against? I'd have thought that someone in your position would have learnt to brush off justifiable criticism by now without appearing silly. After all, it's not exactly uncommon, now is it?

@20 - Louse, yes or no answer - are you Councillor Woodward? I think it only right and proper you should say so, seeing as you are naming your electorate!
