CHRISTIANS from churches across Portsmouth will pray for the city at a huge event this weekend.

More than 1,000 people are expected at A Heart for the City, being held at the Mountbatten Centre, Hilsea, on Saturday night, led by evangelist Tony Campolo.

Churches from across the city have been planning the free event for more than a year and they hope Mr Campolo, founder and president of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, will prove a big draw.

Cosham Baptist Church minister, Jim Thomas, said: 'As a newcomer to the city, I was encouraged to discover that church leaders - from Anglicans to Pentecostals to Salvation Army - had been praying together for the city for over 12 years. This event will provide an opportunity for Christians to worship together and pray for Portsmouth's future.'

The event begins at 7pm and councillors and police officers from the city have been invited to attend.
