A SPONSORED bike ride has raised almost £3,000 towards a church’s new free debt advice service.

North End Baptist Church is setting up the service to help local families.

Nineteen cyclists took part in the ride last month, with 11 riding 30 miles from North End Baptist Church, in Powerscourt Road, Portsmouth, to Fishbourne Roman Palace and back.

The other eight rode about 85 miles from the church to Worthing Pier and back.

The smaller group were going to cycle to Brighton and back but a morning thunderstorm and four punctures meant the route was shortened.

Minister Tracey Ansell said ‘It was a great event which really engaged the community with the debt service.

‘We’re so thankful for everyone’s contribution, support and help.’

Organiser Pete Plowman, 47, said: ‘Teamwork, encouragement and support got us through it and, now that the ride is over, I can look back and say how great it felt to pull a community of cyclists together to do some good for our community.’

The debt service is set to open on August 28 at 9.30am at the church.
