NEARLY 70 years ago Vicki Hollins was whizzing around the countryside on a motorbike, doing her bit for the war effort as one of the land girls.

So when bike salesman Chris Linney heard about her passion, he arranged for Mrs Hollins to go for a ride on his vintage Triumph Trophy 650 from 1968, to thank her for the work she puts in as the Poppy Appeal organiser for Fareham.

Mrs Hollins, now 84, of Justin Close, took over organising the collections in the town two years ago.

Mr Linney said: ‘She’s a real character, and when you look at all the hours she puts in doing the Poppy Appeal, I thought it would be nice to do something for her. I thought this would make a nice treat.’
