FIREFIGHTERS tackled a large fire at an Indian restaurant in the early hours of today.

The blaze started at Mela restaurant, in Drift Road, Clanfield, at around 4am.

Residents who live in flats above were evacuated as three fire engines arrived on the scene to put out the flames.

The fire is believed to have started in a cable unit that was attached to an industrial refrigerator.

Extensive damage has been caused to the kitchen by the fire, as well and smoke damage to the building.

Firefighters from Horndean and Waterlooville spent around 20 minutes putting out the fire and stayed on the scene for three hours.
