CROWDS gathered to watch firefighters battle a rooftop blaze in Southsea.
Neighbours of a two storey house in Highland Road watched as thick black smoke started coming from the property at around 4.15pm yesterday.
Dozens of people stood and stared as firefighters in breathing masks were lifted onto the top of the building using an aerial platform.
Four fire engines from Southsea fire station attended and the blaze had been put out by 5pm.
Manager of the nearby Festing pub Matt Chapman said: ‘It looked like someone was on the roof doing repairs; something must have set alight in the heat.’
