TOP gardener Peter Nicklen picked up his winnings after taking first place in a News competition.

Peter, 71, of Holybourne Road, in Leigh Park, won Bloomin’ Marvellous – the search for the best garden in our area – after The News’ gardening expert Brian Kidd praised his neat lawns and begonias.

Peter said: ‘I’ve entered every year and I’ve come second once.

‘It’s brilliant, we do get a lot of feedback from people who do come and see the garden.’

He and wife Shirley sit down each year to plan how their garden should develop.

‘I’m semi-retired and it does take a lot of my time,’ he added.

‘The enjoyment is that I can come back from work and relax.’

He collected £100 worth of vouchers from Garsons Garden Centre in Titchfield, which sponsored Bloomin’ Marvellous, on Saturday.
