HAYLING Island has retained its coveted Blue Flag beach status.

Beachlands and West Wittering were among 55 beaches in the country to be awarded the Blue Flag by the Keep Britain Tidy charity.

The Isle of Wight boasts four Blue Flags.

These beaches have been rewarded for their fantastic facilities, cleanliness and meeting the highest international standard of water quality.

Jackie Batchelor, executive head for environment and neighbourhood quality at Havant Borough Council, said: ‘We are very proud to fly the Blue Flag for the 22nd consecutive year.

‘This is a true testament to the hard work of the Beachlands team and sets us up for a great summer season for our residents and visitors to Hayling Island.’

Richard McIlwain, operations director of Keep Britain Tidy, said: ‘Holiday-makers and daytrippers want to visit clean, safe beaches and the sight of the Blue Flag flying gives them the reassurance that they will.’
