A body found off the south coast has been named as Hugh Carter.

The Hampshire sailor was found on the shoreline near Salterns Sailing Club in Lymington on November 22.

Mr Carter, 74, was reported missing on November 7 and emergency services carried out extensive searches of the shoreline.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said it was thought that he slipped into the water while trying to reach his boat after an evening out at the club where he was a member.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and an inquest will be carried out in due course.

His family have been informed.
