CITY firefighters had a busy night as a Bonfire Action Team (BAT) tackled more than 10 incidents,

The BAT is a collaboration of Portsmouth City Council, Colas, Hampshire Constabulary and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. It works as a first call-out to reports of bonfires and decides whether to call the fire service or not.

Last night, Southsea fire station went out to 11 incidents between 4pm and 11pm.

Crew manager Steve Jolliffe, from Southsea, said: ‘The BAT team has been very successful, it worked well and everything has been cleared.’

The crew were called out mainly to incidents of bonfires, but also to four bin fires.

Elsewhere, fire crews were not so rushed. Havant went out to a bonfire on Portswood Road, Bedhampton at 8.45pm and Cosham went to a refuse store fire on Normandy Road, Hilsea at 7.30pm.
