Brass band on winning form at competition
TALENTED musicians walked away with armfuls of awards at a regional competition.
Denmead Brass Band scooped awards in every category they entered of the Southern Counties Amateur Band Association contest.
Twelve-year-old Becca Charters started off the medal tally after taking second place in the junior slow melody class playing flugel – a trumpet-like instrument.
She played in the youth quartet along with Anna Brown, Verity Flood and Robert Stevens under the directorship of Sarah Martin and the four youngsters achieved first place as well as being awarded the title and another trophy for best interpretation.
The trombone quartet came first in their class with their rendition of Four Pieces For Four Trombones – retaining their title from last year.
There was further success when conductor Miss Martin put down her conducting baton and played with the cornet quartet who came second in the same class as the trombone group.
Denmead Brass Band’s next concert is on April 21 at Hart Plain Church, Hart Plain Avenue, Waterlooville at 7pm.
