THREE brothers who share a passion for Pompey and a desire to beat childhood kidney failure are cycling 50 miles.

The Hurren brothers – Luke, 22, Connor, 18 and Liam, 15, will ride from Brighton pier to Fratton Park next month for the Pompey Supporters Trust and the Kids Kidney Research.

This time last year Luke and his partner Amy Barker, from Trinity Street, Fareham, were anxiously sitting by their then one-month old son’s bedside as he was treated for kidney failure.

Tiny Olly had contracted a renal infection and, although he is otherwise healthy, one kidney is doing 83 per cent of the work and he will be on medication for the rest of his life.

Pompey fan Luke said: ‘Doctors have told us they are doing their best to get him through his childhood with his kidneys but in his later childhood and late teens he may need new kidneys.

‘It was an awful time, the worst of my life. He was in intensive care with machines doing everything for him.

‘That’s why we chose Kids Kidney Research.’

The boys have also been lifelong Pompey fans.

Luke went to his first game when he was six years old and has since been to the team’s first European match and FA Cup matches as well as league games.

On Saturday the boys will take their six-year-old brother Callum, from Chartwell Close, in Titchfield Common, to his first Pompey match in the hope that he becomes as passionate about the team as them.

Luke, who is a carpenter by trade, said: ‘I think it’s amazing what the supporters trust is doing.

‘I would absolutely love to be a part of the what they are doing to save the club for the people who care so much about it.

‘If I can do that by going flat out by cycling 50 miles from Brighton to Fratton Park then I’ll be pleased to say I’ve done that.’

The cycle ride begins at 9am on January 14.
